Milán (en italiano Milano y en lombardo Milán) es la principal ciudad de la Italia septentrional. Es la capital de la provincia de Milán y de la región de Lombardía. Se encuentra ubicada en la llanura padana, una de las regiones más desarrolladas de Italia.
Sobre su fundación:
Milán fue fundada por los celtas del norte italiano alrededor del año 600 a. C. y fue luego conquistada por los romanos alrededor del año 222 a. C., quienes le dieron el nombre de Mediolanum. En el siglo IV, en tiempos del obispo Ambrosio de Milán y el emperador Teodosio I, la ciudad se convirtió en capital del Imperio Romano de Occidente durante un breve período. En 450 la ciudad fue saqueada por los hunos.

Milán es un importante centro comercial e industrial a nivel internacional además de ser el distrito económico y capital financiera de Italia por los servicios terciarios, las finanzas, la moda, la editoría y la industria. Es además sede de la Bolsa de valores (en piazza Affari) gestionada por Borsa Italiana, uno de los más importantes centros financieros de Europa y es de gran atracción por las sedes administrativas de decenas de multinacionales. Es uno de los mayores centros universitarios, editoriales y televisivos de Europa. Es sede de la Feria de Milán con la mayor superficie expositiva de Europa.
Milan (Italian: Milano; Western Lombard: Milan (listen) is the second largest city of Italy, located in the plains of Lombardy. It is the capital in the Province of Milan, as well as the regional capital of Lombardy. The city has a population of about 1.3 million, while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 3.08 million. The Milan metropolitan area, by far the largest in Italy, is estimated by OECD to have a population of 7.4 million[2].
Milan is renowned as one of the world capitals of design and fashion.[3] The English word millinery, referring to women's hats, is derived from the name of the city. The Lombard metropolis is famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall). The city hosted the World Exposition in 1906 and will host the Universal Expo in 2015. Inhabitants of Milan are referred to as "Milanese" (Italian: Milanesi or informally Meneghini or Ambrosiani
Milan is one of the major financial and business centres of the world: with a 2004 GDP of €241.2 billion (US$312.3 billion) [23] the Milan metropolitan area has the 4th highest GDPs in Europe: were it a country, it would rank as the twenty-eighth largest economy in the world, almost as large as the Austrian economy [24]. The city is the seat of the Italian Stock Exchange (the Borsa Italiana) and its hinterland is the largest industrial area in Italy.
Today Milan is a major centre for the production of textile and garments, automobiles (Alfa Romeo) , chemicals, industrial tools, heavy machinery, book and music publishing. Milan is also considered to be the fashion center of the world. The place has headquarters and businesses of some of the leading international designers, which include Gucci, Prada, Armani, Missoni, Ferré, Corneliani, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana. The city also provides directional functions for the whole of Lombardy, as its industrial base has been externalized throughout the region in the 1960s and the 1970s. FieraMilano, the exhibition center, had a fair ground known as "FieraMilanoCity", which was dismantled, except for a few remarkable buildings (including the cycle sports stadium, built in the '20s), to be house for an urban development, CityLife, exploiting its vicinity to the city centre. The new fair ground, in the north-western suburb of Rho, which was opened in April 2005, makes the Fiera Milano the largest trade fair complex in the world
